Hej everybody,

This week flew by for me, but thinking back there is not many notable things that happened, mostly just the regular weekly events/lessons that we always have that don't really have a bunch worth talking about. But there were a few smaller things that brought me joy that I'll talk about.

On Monday night we met with our friend Anders for the second time. If you read all of my emails he is the one who we taught a few weeks back where I was prompted to talk about covenants. On Monday we didn't really go in with a lesson plan, because he is an interesting and deep thinking guy so we didn't really know where to go next. The conversation turned to prophets and we started discussing the need for a prophet on earth today. He wasn't really agreeing with most stuff we said but it was a pretty good discussion and I think both sides brought up good points. At one point in the discussion I asked him "do you think God loves all of his children?" with the intent to tie it back to prophets when he said yes, but he kind of sat there for a second and said "I really hope so, I really do". At this point I realized that our discussion about prophets no longer mattered. I turned to 1 Nephi 11:16-17 and together we read "16 And he said unto me: Knowest thou the condescension of God? 17 And I said unto him: I know that he loveth his children; nevertheless, I do not know the meaning of all things." I was then able to bear my testimony to him, that I, like Nephi, don't know the meaning all things but I know God loves all His children. We invited him to pray to know how God feels about him, promising him that that is a prayer that will not go unanswered. The spirit was really strong in this lesson and it was a good reminder to me that yes it matters if people accept the restored gospel, but more importantly is helping others feel God's love for them.

Recently we met some people that believe in the trinity, so on the call with family last week I asked my older brother Jake (walking doctrine database) for tips on teaching people who believe in the trinity. He gave me a few tips and some good moments during Jesus Christ's life from the Bible that make it pretty clear that God and Jesus are two separate people. Anyways, on Tuesday when we were talking to people at the mall, I ran into a lady who knew about our church (which surprisingly isn't many here) and said that she wasn't interested in talking to me. Since there isn't many here who know about us I kind of stopped her as she started to walk into a store to just ask what she knew about the church. We ended up having like a 10 minute conversation in the doorway of this store where she told me that she actually lived with a Latter-Day Saint family in her homeland Uganda, and said she just didn't agree with some of the things we believed in. When I asked her what, she said "your view on the trinity". We then started talking about the trinity, where in the kindest way possible I asked her what the trinity explanation is for when Jesus was in the Garden of Gethsemane and He says "not my will, but thine be done". She didn't have an answer, and said that she would have to think more about it herself. I asked her if I could get her phone number so that we could meet up again and talk more about her thoughts, and surprisingly she agreed. While we were trading numbers, I asked her how long she has lived in Sweden and if she liked it here, to which she replied 5 years, and that yes she did like it because she is an introverted person so the closed off personalities of the Swedes fit her better than the extroverted people in Africa. I told her that I was an introvert too so I understood, and after that we said a few more words and parted ways. Now I don't bring this up to show that I "won" in a discussion with someone who believes in the trinity, but because of what happened later that night. When we got home later, I checked my phone to see a text from her that said "Just saying that for an introvert, you are doing very well at meeting and talking to strangers. /Florence". To say that this text made may day is an understatement. I have had some struggles talking to strangers in public so far on my mission. It really really touched me that she would text that, especially considering that I basically spoke against probably her most core belief. I know that that was a long explanation for a simple text, but it was a really great example of Christlike love, no matter the differences we may have.

We had another lesson with Sabrina, and her brother Natnael came by surprise again. We tried to answer some of his questions he had about hell that he asked us the week before, but he didn't really agree with much of what we said. After about a 30 minute explanation on that, we kind of just discussed some other questions both of them had, and it was really good to talk with both of them and hear more of their thoughts. At the end of the lesson Natnael said that he is grateful for all we are trying to teach him, even if there is like 1 percent of stuff that we don't agree on. He then told us that he chose to come to our discussion over playing soccer with his friends, which reminded me that both Sabrina and Natnael are still in high school. I felt a lot of love and respect for them in that moment, and realized their faith in Christ for continuing to make time to meet with us.

The best part of my week was Friday night. It was the young men/young women activity, and they went sledding. If you remember last week I met that family on the street and they ended up coming to church. Well we had a meeting scheduled with them on Friday but they canceled the morning of, which I was pretty upset about because I had been looking forward to meeting with them all week. We decided we would just invite the 2 teenagers to the sledding activity to see if they would want to come. Well they did end up coming which was awesome. We had a lot of fun with them and the other young men and women in the ward. We have an awesome group here in Borlänge and it was awesome to see them all welcome Gitahi and Wanja even though they don't speak much Swedish. The hill was easily the biggest hill I have sled down, and there was sooo much snow which was good because a lot of it melted earlier in the week because it was pretty warm this past week. Anyways the best part of the whole thing after was that we texted Wanjiru (mom of the two teenagers who came) and just said that it was awesome to have Gitahi and Wanja at the activity. Wanjiru replied back thanking us for inviting them, saying that they really needed it. I think they have had trouble making friends since coming to Sweden so I was really glad to help them have a fun night with some new friends.

Another small miracle that happened this week came on Saturday. We had been trying to fix the super old translation devices all week for Wanjiru and her family. On Saturday morning we called a member who knew more about them, and he basically yelled at us and said that they weren't going to work but if we made sure they were plugged in he would try and help us Sunday. This made me pretty angry, especially because we were doing this to help more people who aren't members be able to understand church. We decided we would go to the church to make sure the devices were plugged in on our way to go finding. When we pulled into the church parking lot, an older member with another old lady we didn't recognize were standing outside the church waving excitedly at us as we pulled in. Come to find out the lady we didn't recognize isn't a member, but has met with the missionaries a lot in the past because she absolutely LOVES family history work. She is not interested in the church at all but was so excited to look at me and my companion's ancestors on Family Tree and offered to help us with more family history work. She told the member before we got there that she didn't know why but on her way to the grocery store she felt like she should stop by the church, and then we showed up. Even though she is not interested in the gospel at all, it was a really sweet experience and interaction with this kind old lady. God clearly wanted us to be there for it.

Another thing that we did on Saturday was visit this inactive member named Haile. He is from Eritrea (small African country next to Ethiopia) and has been a member for about 3 years. After talking to him for a bit it seems that he is inactive because he doesn't feel like he fits in with the other members of the ward. He is really quiet and Swedish isn't his first language so it is hard for him to make connections with people. We talked about faith and how God helps us during our trials, and he opened up and told us some stories during his life where he undeniably saw God's hands. It was cool that once we started talking his mind was opened and he was reminded of his experiences that he has had with God. We encouraged him to come to church the next day, and he ended up coming! I greeted him with a big smile and said that I was happy to see him there, and he smiled back and said thank you. He seemed so much happier to be there than when he came a few weeks ago, which made me really really happy to see.

Besides those things the week was mostly just our regular lessons that all went pretty well, besides our friend Aanu who refuses to even read the Book of Mormon before getting a confirmation from God that it the word of God. We fasted for her today to feel the power of the Book of Mormon. Please pray for her heart to be open to the Book of Mormon and the many blessings that come from it!

This transfer and especially the last couple weeks I have learned a lot about listening to the spirit and following promptings. It takes a lot of trust in God to be able to completely rely on Him and the Spirit, especially if sometimes it doesn't seem clear what He wants you to do or it is something that doesn't seem reasonable. I have also learned that it takes intense effort to be able to keep your mind ready and open for guidance from the Spirit. This quote from President Nelson explains it better than I can : "There is nothing easy or automatic about becoming such powerful disciples. Our focus must be riveted on the Savior and His gospel. It is mentally rigorous to strive to look unto Him in every thought. But when we do, our doubts and fears flee." I have definitely have days where I let the distracting thoughts win and I don't receive as much help from God as I would like. It seems like a small difference at first until we realize how much God can help us. President Nelson's words are true when he said "In coming days, it will not be possible to survive spiritually without the guiding, directing, comforting, and constant influence of the Holy Ghost." It truly does take rigorous spiritual work, but what we get back is worth much more than what we put in. We can never be perfect, but as we make daily, hourly, or even minutely effort, God will bless us for our efforts. We are truly blessed to have the guidance of the Holy Ghost in our lives!

Mission Week 29

Monday, January 29, 2024

Tjena,

Another pretty good/busy week. Slowly but surely this area is starting to pick up momentum.

Tuesday and Wednesday this week was spent doing splits/exchanges. On Monday the Örebro elders came up to Borlänge and did pday and splits with us. We met with Sabrina that we've been teaching (basically only person who the previous missionaries taught that we're still teaching). She has 2 siblings who have also been taught by the past missionaries. We've tried to get into contact with both her brother and sister but neither replied. The miracle was that we had our regular Monday night lesson with Sabrina, and although she was 20 minutes late she showed up with her brother Natnael! This was a huge surprise and the lesson went great because Sabrina is really quiet but Natnael was asking a bunch of questions and we were able to share perspectives. Besides that the splits was mostly just finding on the streets, and then the next day the splits in Gävle was basically just knocking doors all day. We also stayed overnight in Gävle because we had in-person district council on Thursday which was good.

After district council on Thursday we drove the 1.5 hrs back to Borlänge and had a lesson with this dude named Liam. He was somebody who was just in our list of people on our app. The missionaries got his number in his October but were never able to meet with him. Anyways he told us he has only been Christian for a couple of months so he is really new to everything that comes with it. We taught him the restoration and explained the Book of Mormon, and after we were done he sat quiet for a bit and then looked up and looked at us and said "Where can I buy one of these books?". It made me so happy to be able to say that the book we read from was his and that he could keep it. His face just lit up when we said that and he said "I am going to read this entire book…...........not all at once but I am going to try and read a lot". 😂

Friday we had probably my favorite "lesson" of my mission. Basically there is 2 dudes who play for the professional soccer team here in Borlänge who come to our church every week that they can. They have never actually taken lessons from the missionaries so this week we set something up to meet with them. If I am honest it wasn't much of a lesson, but we talked for a long time about so much different stuff, including our faith in God and what makes us keep believing even in the world today. They are super relatable and nice guys, and remind me a lot of my friends at home. One is from London and one is from Norway. The one from London knew almost every single smaller rapper I listened to before the mission (which never ever ever happens) so it was a cool connection we had with that. I am not sure if we will be able to meet up with them more in the future because the soccer season is starting up soon, but it was a really good time with them this week.

Later on Friday we had a lesson scheduled with a new person that I got the contact of during splits on Tuesday. Well she no-showed for the lesson so we decided we would just go outside of the coffee shop we were at and find on the streets (we were at the normal spot we usually find on the streets) even though it was -5 F outside. While we were finding I walked past this mom with 2 teenage kids. I made eye contact with the teenage daughter and then just kept walking, which normally means that I won't talk to them anymore because if they see me and then I turn around, follow them, and then cut them off and talk to them it can be a little awkward haha. But as I kept walking in the other direction I felt like I needed to talk to this family, so I turned around and followed behind them up the street until there was a good chance for me to get in front and talk to them. They turned to walk into one of the shops (we find in an outdoor mall type thing) and I stepped in front of them and said that I was going around inviting people to come to church on Sunday, which is another thing I never do. My street approach is normally way different but I had an impression I should invite them to church. When I extended the invitation to the mom, she replied promptly "We live in Borlänge" (the place we were is like a 20 minute drive from Borlänge). I was happy to report to her that the church was in Borlänge, and after she asked a few more questions she left with our card with the church address and said that they would maybe come. So far on my mission I have never had someone come to church that I invited in public. I had a good feeling about this family though, so for the next two days I kept saying to my companion "I can't wait to see that family in church on Sunday" slightly joking but slightly serious, just trying to speak into existence that they would come I guess. Well come Sunday and I am anxiously watching the doors hoping that this woman and her kids walk in. They ended up not coming so we just went in and sat for sacrament meeting obviously. They asked me to help with blessing the sacrament this week so I was sitting up on the stand, and as I was sitting there I looked out the window and saw the family walking up to the church!! This may seem simple to you all reading this, but this really is something that never happens and was truly a miracle led by the Spirit. Only problem was though is that this family is from Kenya and has only been in Sweden for 5 months, so I had to attempt to translate the meeting for them which didn't go so well. Specifically at the part where the woman speaking gave an analogy with sourdough bread and then read a Chinese parable lol. We are planning on meeting up with the family later this week though, so please pray their hearts will be prepared to hear the gospel message!!

I'm sure most of you didn't care or notice but I missed the spiritual thought last week so we starting back up this week with a simple one haha. I really liked this scripture I read during my studies this week. Revelation 3:20 - "Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me." To me this scripture does a great job at depicting our relationship with Jesus Christ. He stands knocking outside the door for all of us, and if we let Him in He will come in and help us, comfort us, and strengthen us. But the important thing to note is that it is our decision to open the door. Christ stands at the door for us all, waiting to be let in, and we have the free will to make the decision to open the door. If you haven't already, open the door! Christ changes our life for the better when we choose to let Him help us.

Mission Week 28

Tuesday, January 23, 2024

What's up everybody,

This week was absolutely full of miracles. I already know this email is about to be pretty long so just a pre-warning lol.

In our mission we focus on 2 specific Preach My Gospel chapters every transfer. This transfer we are focusing on chapter 7 and chapter 8. Chapter 8 is about planning and setting goals. While I am a person who doesn't like goals that much, something we have been focusing on is trying to be more prayerful and specific when we plan for our day. Our efforts in doing this were quickly blessed with a miracle. On Monday night we were planning for our day (we plan our days the night before) and we had put it in about an hour near the end of the day where we would be knocking doors. Parking is really annoying in Sweden so we can't really say we are just going to go to a random apartment complex or neighborhood because it is more likely than not that there will be nowhere for us to park where we won't get ticketed. We have a few apartment complexes we have already knocked at before and we know we can park there, so when we were planning our day we just said we would go and knock there. We thought maybe we should just try and find somewhere else to knock though so that we could mix things up. We both went to google maps on our phones and looked in like a 10 minute vicinity from us for an apartment complex we could knock that also had parking. We didn't find anything so we just decided to call it there and go to our usual spot. As we were about to be done for the night and go eat dinner, my companion said that he thought we should just pray again to confirm our plans with the Lord, if it was what He really wanted us to do the next day (we had already prayed into our daily planning session). I agreed, so we got on our knees and prayed again, asking for an assurance to know what we had planned was right, or guidance for another thing we should do. We sat back down and kinda just sat for a second waiting to see if we felt anything. We technically had 3 minutes left until dinner time, so I just said we would look for 3 more minutes if we could find an apartment complex with parking. Within 30 seconds of going onto google maps I found an apartment complex with acceptable parking. Feeling confident this was what the Lord wanted us to do, we put it in our schedule to knock there the next day. Well, the next day we went there, only to find that all of the apartments had port codes (need a code to get into). But miraculously, like 4 of the apartments in a row that we went into were just cracked open. We knocked all of them but didn't find anyone interested. As we walked out of probably the 4th one, we saw one person in the distance walking on the sidewalk. Right when we saw him, my companion said "well, there's someone for us to talk to". As we approached I asked my companion if he wanted me to talk and he said yes, so I just went up and said we are going around asking people if they are faithful/religious (what we usually say). The guy replied that he was Christian and then I began to try and get to know more about it from there. I asked him how long he had been Christian. After he answered, my companion started speaking before I had the chance to say anything else, and he just said that we are missionaries and asked the guy if he wanted to meet up sometime and talk more. In my head I was thinking "what is he doing??" because it almost always fails if you don't get to know them and have a little conversation first. But to my surprise the guy said "definitivt" (definitely) in a very sure tone. He then proceeded to give us his number so we could schedule a time to meet. We haven't met with him yet but plan to tomorrow. Just so cool to see when we trusted the Lord to plan our day, he led us to someone who was prepared.

The next miracle was honestly even more cool in my opinion. Basically we were knocking doors on Wednesday and we knocked on this one lady's door and we started talking but then she just walked back into her apartment but left the door open. She yelled from the kitchen for us to come in and talk to her in the hallway because she was cooking. Me and my companion didn't know how to react because literally no one invites us in when we knock doors but we went in and we got talking to her about religion. She has a little bit of Christian background but doesn't know much, and even said she didn't know that there was a difference between Christian churches. I explained for her about priesthood authority, the apostasy, and the restoration of priesthood to the earth through prophets, as well as a small explanation of the Book of Mormon. She was nice and listened to everything but at the end just thanked us for coming in to talk. I was a little disappointed she wasn't interested to learn more so I asked if we could come back another time and talk more. She said that we could come back and just knock on the door again if we wanted. Well flash forward to friday, we walk into the mall to go finding but there is like nobody there. My companion says we should just try for a little bit but if it doesn't feel right we can go somewhere else. Before I started approaching people I sat down and said a prayer, and then I got up and just felt like we should leave and go back and visit the same lady. I walked up to my companion and told him that, and he agreed we could leave and visit her but was a little surprised because it had only been a couple days since we met her. As we were walking out to the car though, I remembered that we only had 1 Book of Mormon left, and we had 3 people in the coming two days we needed to give them out to. I told my comp that maybe we should try and find more Book of Mormons instead, but he reminded me that I had the impression to go back to that lady. Anyways we get in the car and pray and ask for guidance, and I get a strong feeling of reassurance that we should go back to this lady and also give out our last Book of Mormon to her even though that would make our problem worse. Well we go back and knock and she wasn't there. I started to get frustrated and question why I would get a prompting to go there if she wasn't going to be home, but then I thought "where is your faith?". We decided to knock the rest of the doors in those apartments and on the second to last door we met a dude who was Christian. We explained the Book of Mormon and asked if he would be interested, and he thought for a second and said no. Normally we would just give up here, but I had a feeling I should keep pushing with this guy, so I gave a simple testimony of the Book of Mormon and promised him that it could change his life, and after that he accepted the book and said we could try and come back another time. I had a good feeling that that specific guy was meant to get that book. The miracle doesn't end there though. We still had our other problem of 0 Book of Mormons left to solve. The only thing is the closest area with other missionaries to us is a 1.5 hour drive and they only had 3 Book of Mormons left. We decided to just start at the church before doing anything else. Well we went in and started looking, and after we found one my companion said we could probably make do with just 1 book, but I replied saying if God wanted us to find more we would. And well we ended up finding 3 Book of Mormons (the exact number we needed) and were able to use them the next couple of days. Another powerful example strengthening my testimony of the Spirit. We trusted God the whole way when we didn't know what to do, and he led us where we needed to go.

The last miracle seems more simple but if you think more you can see God's hands in it. It started off a week ago from Saturday, when we somehow found parking at a new apartment complex. We knocked 1 complex, where there was a guy who said he was busy but we could come back next weekend. After we knocked that one we came to realize all the rest of the apartments around were locked. Well we came back this Saturday to try and follow back up with this guy, but to our disappointment the complex was locked this time. We said a prayer for what we should do next, and I said we would just wait 30 seconds outside to see if someone would come out. After waiting 30 seconds with nothing, we decided to walk a little bit to some apartments that are pretty close by that we knew wouldn't be locked. We start from the top so we went up and knocked the first door with no answer, and as we were about to knock the second we heard somebody come into the apartment building from the bottom, so we waited to see if they would come up to where we were so we weren't just talking to someone else when they came up. A lady came up and we told her we were missionaries giving a message about Jesus Christ. She said that she was Christian too so I asked her if she had heard of our church before, and she said she had heard of it but didn't know much about it. This would normally be a perfect opportunity to tell more, but I followed the spirit and just asked if we come back another time. In a tone just as sure as the other guy we met earlier in the week she said "absolut" (absolutely). I was so shocked but she gave us her number and we are gonna try and go back soon. This one seems simple but if you think about it the fact that the apartment was randomly open the week before just so the guy could tell us to come back next weekend, and then we waited outside for the right amount of time so we could be at the top of the stairs waiting for her. Seems like coincidences, but there's no such thing as coincidences with God 🙂.

Those were the miracles that we had. The rest of the week consisted of member meals (one with a mexican lady that was sooooo good), going to the Dala häst factory here (factory for the Swedish wooden horses), a lot of finding, a few lessons, and a ward talent show where I was basically forced to wear a towel on my head and pretend to be my companions wife lol.

Again I am sorry for the long email!! If you made it to this point I hope it was worth the read and I appreciate you🙏🙏

Have a blessed week❤️

Week 27 - Mirakel Sker

Monday, January 15, 2024

Tjena,

If I am honest this was one of the worst if not the worst week of my mission so far. It is rough to have 2 new missionaries open up a previously closed area. Even though I whitewashed my last area too, experience doesn't really help me in this situation. I could make a long list of reasons why whitewashing sucks or why this week has been bad but that is just negative so I'll just name the three main reasons this week hasn't been that good (I am sorry if it's still really negative 😂).

First happened last Monday and would have been completely avoidable if we had someone here who had previously lived here. Basically almost every missionary apartment in the mission has like a community laundry room that you can sign up for once a week for like a 3-4 hour slot to do laundry. In my first area it was just a physical calendar we stuck a peg into with our key. In this area we sign up electronically using a fob on our keys and use that same fob to get into the laundry room. What we didn't realize is that after our reserved time slot, the fob does not work to get us into the laundry room (in my first area we usually had a dryer load go past our time slot and just pick up the clothes when it was done). Basically my clothes spent about 10 hours locked in the laundry room on Monday which was pretty stressful for me haha.

Second was we got in a car crash. Don't know how many details I should give because I don't know if everything is legally resolved yet but basically I could not see because the sun was directly in my line of sight as well as the sunlight reflecting off the snow. So I basically could not see at all and you can guess what happened from there. No one was hurt and the cars took pretty minimal damage which is a blessing, but kinda was just another thing on top of everything else.

Third was just that a lot of lessons and people canceled on us so we just spent a lot of time finding (door knocking, talking to people on the street, talking to people in the mall). If you remember in my last area I was spending hours at a time in a giant mall talking to people, which I eventually got the hang of pretty well. The problem for me this week was honestly just finding a desire to talk to people. It's not that I am scared or lazy I just don't really feel it in my heart to talk to people. This just made all of the hour long finding periods we had just kinda drag on. Also it was FREEZING this week, I think the coldest it got was -5 F with a feels like temperature of -17 F. I don't know if any of you have experienced it before but my nose hairs were freezing within 10 seconds of walking outside lol. You know it's cold when the 19 F temperature yesterday felt really really nice.

We were blessed to have a few lessons this week though. Some were pretty crazy and unproductive (people bashing us, and people with very wild claims from the Bible that I won't be getting in to), but some were really good too. One was with a guy named Anders that the missionaries had only taught like 2 times before we came. After just talking with him about his religious background at the start of the lesson and what he thinks about what the missionaries have taught so far, me and my companion were both pretty lost from where to go from there. Then though, the word "förbund" very clearly popped into my head, which is the Swedish word for covenant. My first reaction to that was confusion because he was so new to meeting with the missionaries and I thought it would be too early to talk about baptism and other covenants. But I trusted the prompting and explained what a covenant was to him, and how we can gain a stronger covenant relationship/connection with Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ through covenants. After I explained it, he stared down at the table for a good five minutes, and then looked me straight in the eyes and asked me if I could please explain more. We went into a long explanation of covenants, the doctrine of Christ, and then priesthood authority and Joseph Smith. He wanted to know how he could know Joseph Smith was a prophet of God so we read Moroni 10:3-5 with him. He gave some very profound answers to the questions we asked him about those scriptures but unfortunately he said he wanted to feel the calling we were giving him to pray about the Book of Mormon but he couldn't feel it. Was a really good lesson for me though, definitely the most I've been directly led by the spirit in a lesson before.

Other good lesson was with this African lady named Hariet who I gave a Book of Mormon to on like my first day in this area. We talked about the Book of Mormon with her and probably had to say 15+ times that the Book of Mormon and the Bible are not the same book, and I think she understood at least that by the end haha. She is really nice though and said she wants to try and be more spiritual again for her New Years resolution this year so I hope we can help her out.

Considering we had a baptism (of an 8 year old) in church this week, and my conversation about covenants with Anders, I thought to just share a quick quote about covenants (don't have a lot more time to write). Elder Bednar said this on covenants "We take the Savior's yoke upon us as we learn about, worthily receive, and honor sacred covenants and ordinances. We are bound securely to and with the Savior as we faithfully remember and do our best to live in accordance with the obligations we have accepted. And that bond with Him is the source of spiritual strength in every season of our lives." As we enter covenants with God and Jesus Christ, and continue to focus on them, we truly are blessed with spiritual strength and extra help from Jesus Christ in our lives. Even though this week was really hard for me, I felt a renewal of hope and strength as I renewed my covenants with the sacrament on Sunday. Covenants are such a blessing if we focus on keeping them to the best of our imperfect abilities. We don't have to be perfect, we just have to keep trying.

Mission Week 26

Tuesday, January 9, 2024

Tjena,

Hope you all had a good week and a good New Years Eve. Decent week for me.

First half of the week was just getting the last things in before I left Utby. We had a couple member meals and some other visits to members/people we are teaching. One of the meals was another classic Swedish Christmas meal which consisted of meatballs, potatoes, salmon, purple cabbage, pork, and some dish with potatoes and anchovies that was actually really good. The members in Utby are really really awesome, going to miss them for sure.

Thursday was transfer day so all the missionaries met at the train station in Stockholm like usual so it was good to see everybody. After that me and my new companion drove the 4hr drive up to Borlänge. The drive was during a snow storm so it took a little longer than usual. There is so much snow up here, and it's so much colder than Göteborg. It's been in the low 20s/ high teens so far, but is supposed to drop like 10 more degrees later this week.
My new companion likes to play piano and is an extremely positive guy. Very different from my personality but things are going decent so far. His Swedish is alright, but he has only been out for 2 transfers so he is still learning. I've been having to talk a lot more than I'm used to which should be good for me.

On Friday one of the members called us and asked if we could help with service, so we helped her and her husband take wood from big piles and load it into their trailer. A lot of people use wood/fire to heat their houses in Sweden, so they just have stacks and stacks of wood that they cut during the summer and then use up in the winter.

Saturday was literally just an entire day of finding. Knocking neighborhoods, knocking apartments, talking on the street, talking in the mall, and facebook.

Sunday was church in the new ward. I don't know if I already mentioned this, but the area I am now serving in was closed last transfer because a lot of our missionaries in the mission are newer so many of them had to be trained in a trio, making it so there were less missionaries available to put in other areas. Anyways, the members here are super excited to have missionaries back. One lady even came up and said that she had prayed to God that morning and said "Ok Heavenly Father, it's about time we have missionaries back" 😂. Everyone there was really nice to us. There are probably about 30 people in the ward who come, so a bit smaller. But as one of the members made sure to mention, they are small in size but big in heart. Sunday night the same member who had us do service on Friday, invited us over to celebrate new years with her and her family. This lady has celebrated Christmas with missionaries literally her entire life, but this year she couldn't because the area was closed. It was her first Christmas celebrating without missionaries, so she made sure to invite us for new years. The night was pretty simple, just ate dinner and played some games. We weren't allowed to stay out past our regular time, but could stay up to midnight inside our apartment. We have a little balcony so we just went out and watched all the fireworks.

That's mostly it for the week. Just been doing a lot of contacting and finding since we are both new to the area and it was closed last transfer. The apartment is really nice here and is honestly the only thing keeping spirits up right now.

I feel like I have talked about joy for a lot of my spiritual thoughts but I am going to talk about it again today because it is something that is constantly on my mind. I hear a lot of missionaries say that they feel more joy on their mission than they have ever felt, or return missionaries saying that their mission was the happiest and most joyful time of their life. For me it has not been like that up to this point. There are definitely joyful moments, but I often find myself getting caught up in other things that prevent me from feeling the fullness of joy that the gospel offers. I know I have already quoted this talk before, but "Joy and Spiritual Survival" by President Nelson is a great talk that talks about joy. He explains how our purpose on earth is to have joy. "Life is filled with detours and dead ends, trials and challenges of every kind. Each of us has likely had times when distress, anguish, and despair almost consumed us. Yet we are here to have joy? Yes! The answer is a resounding yes! But how is that possible? And what must we do to claim the joy that Heavenly Father has in store for us? … My dear brothers and sisters, the joy we feel has little to do with the circumstances of our lives and everything to do with the focus of our lives. When the focus of our lives is on God's plan of salvation, Jesus Christ and His gospel, we can feel joy regardless of what is happening—or not happening—in our lives. Joy comes from and because of Him. He is the source of all joy." Joy comes from changing the focus of our lives. There will always be reasons to be angry, sad, or disappointed in life, and there will always be reasons to be happy and joyful. As we choose to change our focus and focus on Jesus Christ instead of the things of the world, we can experience true, lasting joy. President Nelson also explains how we can begin to feel the joy that comes from Jesus Christ. "How, then, can we claim that joy? We can start by "looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith" "in every thought." We can give thanks for Him in our prayers and by keeping covenants we've made with Him and our Heavenly Father. As our Savior becomes more and more real to us and as we plead for His joy to be given to us, our joy will increase." I have come to learn that experiencing joy takes effort! We can't just go through the motions, even if we are doing good things, and expect to just experience joy. I'm not a big person on goals or New Years resolutions, but as I was pondering I was thinking that this year (or at least the next little bit) I am going to focus on joy. I encourage you all to ponder on something you can do this year to draw closer to our Savior, whether it's broad and general like mine, or something small and simple. As we put in effort to draw closer to the Savior, we will experience joy.

Gott nytt år!🎆🎊
