What's good everybody,

Hope you all doing well and had a good week. Mine was pretty decent. Here's some of the interesting stuff that happened.

Biggest event of the week was definitely on Friday which was the Swedish holiday Midsommar which is celebrated on the summer solstice every year. The traditions behind it are honestly pretty weird and revolve mostly around dancing around a tall pole (see pictures) and singing weird songs. People just have large gatherings with these types of festivities. We went to 2 separate ones because we were late to the first one so missed all of the main traditional dancing and stuff. Honestly mostly weird like I said but it was cool to be able to see the Swedish traditions. We had the whole day to do whatever we wanted after finishing some stuff in the morning so after the two pole gathering things we had a barbeque with a bunch of latinos that one of our members from Chile invited us to. We just sat and talked and played some games and the food was so so good. Even with all the festivities my favorite part of the day was definitely talking to this senior age lady from Chile who was there. She has had such a hard life with many unique trials but she still has such a strong faith and positivity. Really inspirational.

Besides that the week was just what you would expect a missionary week to look like. We had a lot of street contacting but had some lessons trickling in each day as well which was nice. Here is a short summary about each of the lessons:

-Our friend Michel who has been taught by the missionaries for a couple of months. His parents are Syrian, but he is agnostic. Also trying to become a comedian so is a pretty funny guy. We talked about the spirit and helped him recognize that he has felt the spirit more in his life from meeting the missionaries. These are the best moments as a missionary.

-Our friend Daniel whose parents are latino but he is also agnostic. We had a similar lesson with him but he was more resistant and it seems like he's not really willing to put in the spiritual work to grow his faith.

-A 16 year old named King who is from Africa that I met on the street last week so this was our first lesson. He is a chill dude but had some doubts about the Book of Mormon and Joseph Smith because he said when he was in Africa someone gave him a book and said it would help him come closer to Christ and then he took it home and started having bad dreams. He also said a lot of the preachers in Africa perform miracles of some sort but then really are corrupted so it can be hard to know truth. He said he would need to ask his mom before he could take a Book of Mormon.

-A lady named Dina whose parents are from Kosovo but she has grown up in Sweden. She seemed pretty interested in our church so we just explained about the Restoration but her dog who was with her was super restless and kept distracting her and she stopped the lesson midway through saying she couldn't focus and wanted to continue tomorrow. We said sure but she texted later that night saying she had already chosen her Orthodox church.

-Met with a Muslim guy named Fullah who was super super nice. He didn't seem to be super educated on the Muslim faith but he went to a Christian school growing up so knew a good amount about Christianity. We just explained the laws of justice and mercy and why Jesus is necessary (according to our faith). He is just really respectful and nice so hard to determine what he is thinking.

As you can see we had a good amount of lessons which meant less street contacting but we still had quite a few hours of street contacting. But this week, thankfully, the street contacting felt lighter, in a sense that it felt like less of a burden. If you've been reading my emails you know I've had a difficult past couple of transfers (like 3-4 months) because of many things (hard companion, difficult area being among them). In general I haven't had the most joyful experience as a missionary and these past couple months seemed to take a toll on my mental state, putting me at mental low in terms of motivation and joy coming into this new transfer. After talking to some family and friends about my struggles last pday they all told me that they would keep me in their prayers. Throughout the week I felt a very noticeable difference in everything that I did and can credit it to nothing else than the prayers of these people (as well as the many others who pray for me). I'm not really sure how to put it into words but like I said everything seemed to just feel lighter like there was a weight lifted and I knew that this was from the power of prayer. I haven't really had many strong experiences with prayer in my life but this week was definitely a testament to me of the power of prayer and God's perfect timing. In the last general conference President Holland gave a talk on the similar topic but with much more extreme experiences that he has had. Here's a piece of it that I like and think is applicable: "Brothers and sisters, I testify that God hears every prayer we offer and responds to each of them according to the path He has outlined for our perfection ... It is for reasons known only to God why prayers are answered differently than we hope—but I promise you they are heard and they are answered according to His unfailing love and cosmic timetable." Thank you to all of you who keep me and other missionaries in your prayers. It really does make a difference even if you don't think it does.❤️

Mission Week 50

Sunday, June 23, 2024

Tjenare everybody,

Couple days late this week but we going with it anyways. Last week was a pretty solid week with a good amount that happened.

Tuesday and Wednesday were easily the two busiest days of the whole transfer (also the two last days of the transfer lol). Like usually happens we went around saying goodbye to all the friends in the area but definitely felt weird for both me and my companion to be saying goodbyes considering the area was closing.

We had lunch with our friend Yazan who I don't think I've talked about in the emails cuz he is Muslim and we haven't actually taught him anything but he is a fun guy who we've interacted with a good amount.

We met with the dude Hugo that we taught the Restoration to door knocking a couple weeks back and he was really cool and respectful just like last time.

We also met with our friend Rainmark, who if you have been reading my emails is the guy from like 3-4 weeks ago who has endless questions. He has had some personal issues so we hadn't seen him for a while but it was great seeing him and actually cool because he spent like the first 30 minutes of our conversation just expressing gratitude for me and my companion helping him increase his faith and help him on his spiritual journey. He then followed this by asking a bunch of super deep questions which we legitimately didn't have time for so we told him to meet with the other missionaries haha.

Another goodbye was our guy Bernard who is from Africa. Haven't really talked about him in the emails but he is a really nice and funny guy who ever time we calls him basically screams in the phone "HELLO…. HOW ARE YOU??" and then if my companion is talking he will say "How's my brotha from America???". He had a hard time understanding when we taught him but he always just called us his brothas and said he admires us for what we do. Awesome guy.

We also had a lesson with a guy Helge who we had only taught one other time in the transfer but he has been taught by the missionaries for a couple of years. Don't remember what I said about him last time but basically he has some of his own personal issues that hold him back from feeling the spirit and experiencing the gospel's blessings in their fullness. My companion said to me before that he feels like I am "Helge's guy" and I'm not sure why but I kind of felt like that as well haha. I think a lot of missionaries have a hard time being direct if there is a chance of it offending someone, but this lesson I just went in and kind of laid it out for him that he has a decision to make if he wants to change and keep moving forward on the path closer to God. That we can't expect God to help us progress if we aren't doing all that is in our power first to come closer to Him. I promise I said it in an understanding and loving way but of course still a little harsh and firm but I think that is what he needed. In both lessons with him I felt really strongly guided by the spirit with basically no lesson plan or idea of what I was going to say in advance.

And then of course we said bye to some members as well. The newer member Steven who we always spend time with, a kind of crazy old lady Birgitta who is also just really funny, and then some families as well. The members were definitely one of the top highlights of a rather slow and bleak transfer.

I feel like my attitude of the past transer wasn't the greatest because we didn't really see anything happen, but meeting with all these people in the last 2 days in Vendelsö (even if it's not that many people) gave me a gratitude for being able to meet all of them and left me with a more positive outlook on how the transfer went.

On Thursday we had transfers where all the missionaries who are either moving or getting a new companion gather in Stockholm before going to their respective areas. A lot of people moved this transfer which meant that my entire MTC district (group I was there with) was in Stockholm on Thursday, which was the first time all of us were together since the MTC close to a year ago (pic included). That was fun for sure as well as seeing some of the other missionaries I am friends with.

Since being here in my new area, we have continued to do a lot of street contacting (to my disappointment 🙃) . Don't have any cool experiences with sharing the gospel in this sense but I did have a nice interaction with this nice dude. It was raining pretty heavily outside and this dude walked by me who was carrying a bunch of grocery bags in each hand. He said no thanks but that was nice of me to offer and then kept walking. I ended up walking behind him like 30 seconds later and saw that he was trying to enter into a building with a pull handle but couldn't open the door because his hands were full. I just opened the door for him and by the tone of his voice I thought he was getting mad at me but he told me to go and get free churros at this churro food truck that was in the same square (he and his friend run the truck). It was really simple but still something that made me happy especially during the hours of street contacting we did that day. (pic included)

We have also done service for a few members (chopping wood and laying soil) as well as a few lessons. One of the couples that we did service for live out in the middle of the forest and try and eat most of what they can by things they have grown. Which meant that for lunch we got stinging nettle soup, which honestly wasn't as bad as it sounds (pic included).

For one the lessons we taught a cool lady from Bolivia about the Book of Mormon. Another was a lesson with a member from Romania who got baptized in January. She is an interesting lady for sure, and she also bought us chips, ice cream, soda, cake, and watermelon to eat during the lesson so didn't feel great about eating that haha. But she has a really cool testimony and conversion story. She met some missionaries in 2019 who gave her a card on the bus to come to church, but then her dad died and she had a lot of other things go on in her life, and then covid hit and all the churches closed. But she ended up making friends with a member many years later and eventually figured out about the church again through her. She still has the card those original missionaries gave her and she keeps it in her wallet.
We also had a lesson with one of our friends from Greece who is preparing for baptism. His testimony is so strong that he seems like a member already, but he is just trying to find a new place to live before he can get baptized which is exciting.

For the spiritual thought I wanted to connect back to the lesson with Helge that I talked about earlier in this email because I think it is a principle that can apply to us all. Like I said above I talked with Helge about how we can't just want things to change or be better without actually doing everything in our power to make happen what we would like to happen. Yes God is all powerful, but Him just fixing all of our problems would defeat the purpose of us being here on Earth. Things will happen according to His will and He will bless us in the ways that we need. But He also expects us to act and use our agency to try and solve our problems because that is how we learn and grow. The story of the Brother of Jared in the Book of Mormon is a great example of this. After he has built their boats in the way that the Lord commands him to, there is still some problems preventing the boats from being used. The Lord gives immediate direction for some of the issues, but in response to the problem of there being no light in the ships, He tells the Brother of Jared to bring Him an idea. The Brother of Jared brings him a simple idea, some stones, which the Lord works with and lights them up to solve the problem. This is how it often goes in our life. The Lord won't give us specific direction for every single problem, but will magnify our efforts as we put in honest effort through acting in faith. When I was talking with Helge I compared this to myself how I talk a lot about wanting to feel more joy in my life and pray to experience more joy, but sometimes I can get stuck feeling down and frustrated and not put in the little efforts that make a big difference. Of course the Lord wants me to feel joy, but what do I learn from just getting joy without doing anything to get it? As I have acted in faith and put in the little efforts to feel more joy, I have felt the Lord take those small efforts and help me feel great amounts of joy. At the beginning it can feel like our efforts aren't doing anything, but that is part of acting in faith. Continuing to put in the effort even when it doesn't feel like God is putting in His part. God will help us in His own will and timing in order to help us grow and become better. This really does apply to all aspects of life. As we all have our own problems we can act in faith, trusting that God is helping us the entire way.

D&C 123:17 "Therefore, dearly beloved brethren, let us cheerfully do all things that lie in our power; and then may we stand still, with the utmost assurance, to see the salvation of God, and for his arm to be revealed"

Sorry if the email was long/boring this week but I actually had some stuff to talk about so I figured I would tell about it:)

Have a good week❤️

Mission Week 49

Saturday, June 15, 2024

Hello,

Pretty uneventful week again. But we did get transfer news and because this area is so slow it will be closing which makes another area that I have only stayed in 1 transfer (6 weeks). I know it is hard to keep track of because I have moved so much but the new area that I am going to will make my 6th area in 8 transfers so pretty crazy. The area is called Södertälje and is only about 40 minutes from where I am now, so also just a bit south of Stockholm. But this one is actually a city rather than just a little suburb. From what I've heard all the missionaries that serve in Södertälje really really love it so I am looking forward to it. My new companion is from Australia but besides that I don't know much about him but he seems like a chill guy.

As far as the week only a few mentionable things. We found a few people who seemed extremely interested but two of them blocked us the next day and the other has already stopped replying. More confirmation to me that this area is meant to close😃.

On Wednesday I got an operation on my toe for my ingrown toenail so since then I have been wearing a sandal on one foot and a shoe on the other. Have definitely gotten a lot of comments from random strangers about it including a lady saying she thought it was a new trend haha. Unfortunately the toe is infected though so will be going back to the hospital before I leave.

On Thursday it was Swedish national day. If you read Zach's emails he talked about how in Norway the national day is like the biggest day of the year for them. In Sweden it isn't like that because there is midsommar which is a celebration on the longest day of the year in a couple weeks and they take that holiday really seriously. So most Swedes don't even celebrate the national day but there was a ward party with grilling and some lawn games and then we sang the national anthem. Nothing crazy but it was still fun.

That was basically it for the week. The members continue to be awesome and the finding continues to be too much🙃. Also gave a talk in church on Sunday and it seemed I was able to touch some people through that so that was nice.

One of the members we met with this week is a lady that is from Mexico that moved here because she married a Swede but her husband and kids are all not members. We thought our spiritual thought would be given to some of the family so we prepared something really simple, but it ended up being just her. It ended up being a good discussion though. We read some verses in Alma chapter 32 that explain faith in a simple way. We normally read a few verses before but then focus a lot on verse 21 because it gives a simple definition about what faith is. However she read verse 19 and had some good thoughts. "19 And now, how much more cursed is he that knoweth the will of God and doeth it not, than he that only believeth, or only hath cause to believe, and falleth into transgression?" We talked about this verse in relation to faith, how we all in our lives receive different spiritual experiences, big and small, that can help us build our faith and testimony in God. Through that faith we create a relationship with him, helping us realize that keeping His commandments and living His gospel are important. This means that we are more accountable and expected to keep following Him because we already know that it is something good for us. After determining this we had a discussion about the things that we can do in our life to make sure we do keep believing in God after we have received that testimony. I think of a quote from President Nelson that emphasized the importance of consistent scripture study. "With frightening speed, a testimony that is not nourished daily "by the good word of God" can crumble. Thus, the antidote to Satan's scheme is clear: we need daily experiences worshipping the Lord and studying His gospel." I think our prophet makes it pretty clear that daily experiences studying the gospel are vital to maintaining our testimony and our faith. I can definitely say that on my mission I have gained a love for the scriptures and I really have been able to see how they have deepened my testimony and faith and changed me as a person. I encourage you all to put in the effort required to have daily experiences with the Lord. Of course excuses will always be there if we want them to be but the Lord will bless us with His spirit and stronger faith and testimony as we put in effort from our side.

Have a blessed week🙏

Mission Week 48

What's up everybody hope you all doing good

This week had a few eventful things but not much that would be interesting to any of you so here is the quick rundown.

On Tuesday we had zone conference (meeting of a larger geographical group of missionaries). It was in Stockholm so we got to go into the city. Good to see some missionary friends. Played soccer with the young men in our ward that night.

Thursday had another missionary meeting with a smaller group and then went to the doctor and got my toe stabbed for 10 minutes before asking them to treat it correctly (ingrown toenail🫠).

Friday we got to play some mini golf because the language cafe at the library that we usually go to is ending for summer so they paid for everyone to go play mini golf and bought us all ice cream as well. We are trying to teach 2 of the guys that go. Probably won't end up teaching them with how it's been going but had a fun time.

Saturday got to play basketball again which was great this week. Also had a lesson with our awesome newer member who we are coaching up to teach the missionary lessons.

Pday we took a bus and a ferry to a little island off the coast and kind of just wandered around the forest and coast.

Besides those things the week was the same thing that I've been putting in my email every week. Just out talking to people in the mall and door knocking. Like I mentioned last week getting pretty deflated with how much effort we are putting in and the same thing just continues every week. The dude Enrique that I talked about last week for those who read the email has now not replied for 4 straight calls with a text following. Disappointing for sure.

Simple spiritual thought this week but I've been thinking about Ether 12:6 "And now, I, Moroni, would speak somewhat concerning these things; I would show unto the world that faith is things which are hoped for and not seen; wherefore, dispute not because ye see not, for ye receive no witness until after the trial of your faith." Specifically the last part of that verse, that we receive no witness until after the trial of our faith. A lot of the time, it can be hard to have faith when we can't really see the positive outcome or result that we are going to receive. My whole mission but especially this transfer has been a good test of that for me. Like I've been saying we've just been spending all of our time trying to find people to teach and rather than getting better it is only getting worse (we taught 0 non-member lessons this week). I would be lying if I said I'm not frustrated, but I have a choice to keep working hard and trusting in God or to get mad and start giving less effort because I'm not seeing results. My brother Jake was a good example of this for me this week. He has been looking for a job for a little bit with no success yet. Last week he had a job interview that was going really well, until the lady asked him if he'd be willing to work on Sundays. He said no, and she further explained that people take turns doing the Sunday shift so it would only be every couple of months that he would have to work on Sunday. Rather than giving in he chose to act in faith and say no, which ended the job interview there. No that doesn't mean that he will instantly be blessed and receive an even better job this coming week, but he chose to have faith in God and His commandments knowing that God has a bigger plan for him. This was a great example for me. Shoutout Jake🙌💪. I've also felt these past weeks that God has helped strengthen my faith and confidence in Him, even though things have been going completely contrary to what I would hope for. God will bless us in His own will and timing as we choose to act in faith before we know the coming result.

Have a good week🙏
